Chamber Business After Hours at the Arnould Gallery next Wednesday, July 16th
Join us next Wednesday, July 16th from 5pm to 7pm for a special Business After Hours at the Arnould Gallery with proprietor Gene Arnould as he celebrates his 30th Anniversary in business! Located at 111 Washington Street in Marblehead, the Arnould Gallery is a destination shop for fine art, including oils, watercolors, giclees, and mixed media, as well as unique gift items such as hand made pottery, model sailboats, and decorative wine caddies. Marblehead Rotary Club is Bringing Back The Great Race on August 9th

The Great Race is a fun-filled, water race event and family cookout on Children's Island sponsored by the Marblehead Rotary Club. Any non-motorized water vehicle is eligible. The race will begin (for all vessels EXCEPT sailboats) at Riverhead Beach in Marblehead, and follow a marked course to Children's Island. Sailboats will start at the mouth of the harbor. The start at Riverhead Beach will begin promptly at 10 AM for all EXCEPT sailboats, so partisans should be ready well ahead of the start time. There are three different entry categories/fees, with six different means of transportation:
Youth (to age 15): any young person through age 15 is eligible to race with parent/guardian consent. The entry fee, which includes cookout voucher and t-shirt, is $25.
Adult: This category is for all participants ages 16 and up. The entry fee, which includes cookout voucher and t-shirt, is $50.
Business: This category is for any business or organization that wants to participate under the business or organization name. The entry fee, which includes up to 3 cookout vouchers and t-shirts, is $100. You may enter UP to 3 participants for the $100 entry fee. You may decorate your vessel with your company name/logo.
Eligible Water Vessels: You may kayak, sail, canoe, row or windsurf. We also have an "Other" category, which you may enter, at your own risk, as long as your means of water transportation is non-motorized. Each category will be given their own start time, so you will be competing within your own category, PLUS overall best time. There will be winners for each category (in Youth and Adult) AND a grand prize for the fastest overall time, regardless of category. Transportation, WITH your vessel, will be available from the island if you choose not paddle/sail/row your vessel back.
NON-RACE PARTICIPANTS: If you would prefer to not race, but partake of the activities and cookout on the island, you may enter as a non-racing participant. The fee of $15 for Youth and $30 for Adult includes round-trip transportation, cookout voucher and a t-shirt. Boat leaves from from the State Street Dock at 9:30 AM prompt; the return boat from the island will depart at 3:30. Please pack sunscreen and any other supplies you feel you will need for 4+ hours in the sun!
The Details:
9AM: All participants EXCEPT sailboats should report to Riverhead Beach to check in, get your assigned number, and prepare for the race start. Sailboats report to the mouth of the harbor.
10AM: The race starts: ALL vessels EXCEPT sailboats start at Riverhead Beach. SAILBOATS follow a course starting just outside at the mouth of the harbor, ready by 10:15AM. (Sailboat instructions provided day of race.) Participants will be grouped by category. The race will follow a clearly marked waterway, hugging Marblehead Neck, out past the lighthouse to Children's Island. Well-wishers/fans may group at Chandler Hovey Park to cheer racers on!
11AM-noon: The racers should be arriving at the island. Race officials will guide participants to proper tie-ups for their vessels, and make sure they get onto the island.
NOON-3:15PM: Cookout, entertainment, games, family swim & swim races in the island pool and awarding of trophies. Music provided by The Grateful Ted/Britannica Band (Classic Rock of the 50's, 60's and 70's). All participants should be ready to leave the
island between 3:15 - 3:30PM.
